Just a ten minute drive from Panaji (Panjim), Diwar is accessible only by ferry. Drive through the Viceroy’s Arch in Old Goa and board the drive-in ferry at the Old Goa ferry wharf to cross over Mandovi on the south-east side of the island in a little over five minutes.
The island is connected to Ribandar on the south-west side and Narao on the north side, both by ferry.
Though four-wheelers are charged a nominal amount, the transportation of pedestrians and two-wheelers is free. These ferries operate from 6 a.m. in the morning through the day, till around 2 a.m. in the night.
However, in case of an emergency, during the early morning rest period (2 a.m. – 6 a.m.), one can shout across the waters and these ferries come alive, ready at your service to cross over, at a small special fee.
A short straight drive from the ferry wharf will bring you to Piedade Square – the main square of the island. A left turn from here will take you to the Our Lady of Piedade Church on the hilltop, passing by Our Lady of Divar High School which was once the house of Fr. Jacome Gonsalves. Turning right from the square, the road heads to the wonderland of timeless archaeological treasures of Malar and Narao.
